Top 25 Hymns Sung in Churches Today

Nov 6, 2012 — 7 Comments

The other day I ran across a list from Lifeway Worship of the top 25 hymns that are sung in churches today. Because most hymns are public domain and are not tracked because of copyright laws, this list was compiled from Lifeway Worship’s sales of traditional & contemporary arrangements of each hymn for the past four years.

(Lifeway Worship is an online store front to purchase piano, organ, chord & orchestra music for individual pieces of music)

Top 25 Hymns Sung in Churches Today:

1. How Great Thou Art
2. Great Is Thy Faithfulness
3. Blessed Assurance, Jesus Is Mine
4. All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name
5. Holy, Holy, Holy
6. Jesus Paid It All
7. Christ the Lord Is Risen Today
8. Crown Him with Many Crowns
9. It Is Well with My Soul
10. To God Be the Glory
11. The Solid Rock
12. Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing

“How Great Thou Art” and “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” are still under copyright, so CCLI tracks them and they rank #26 and #53 respectively on their list of all copyrighted songs sung in church.

So what do you think of this list? Is there a song missing you think should be on this list?

My two all-time-faves are “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross” and “How Deep Father’s Love for Us”, and they SHOULD be on there!

Daniel, completely agree with you on both accounts. I have just introduced “How Deep the Father’s Love for Us” this past year to our church and they fell in love with it the first time. My church also loves singing the song “The Wonderful Cross”, which is a combination of “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross” with a great chorus.

      Thanks for your input!

I also really like “What a Friends we Have in Jesus” and “The Old Rugged Cross” as well… the rest of the list looks good!

Two more great songs! I make a mental note of some of the songs that I thought would be on this list as well and “The Old Rugged Cross” was one that I thought of.

One more time, it is great to have you writing with us on “Proverbial Thoughts”!

Anthony, thanks for your favorite songs! Quick question, what is your music like at Riverside, traditional or blended?
