Worship Wednesday: “His Mercy Is More”

Worship Wednesdays Banner

Today’s Worship Wednesday song comes from Matt Papa and is entitled “His Mercy Is More”.

I love the words to this song. Here is the first verse:

What love could remember no wrongs we have done
Omniscient, all knowing, he counts not their sum
Thrown into a sea without bottom or shore
Our sins they are many, his mercy is more

This song reminds me of the beautiful words found in Lamentations 3:22-23 which says,

The steadfast of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

We can also look in the New Testament at Hebrews 8:12 where Paul reminds us of how merciful our God is towards us. it says,

For I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more.

Let’s worship God today for his mercy toward us all!

Foundation Verse #1 – Genesis 1:1

Today we begin our journey as we look to dig deeper into God’s Word and to lay a foundation of what we believe. In my last post about the Foundation Verses, I challenged you to join me and to memorize these verses so that we can do what I Peter 3:15 tells us to do –

but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,

So, are you ready? Here we go…

Genesis 1:1 – In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

genesis-1-1-bible-lock-screenIn the movie The Sound of Music, there is a song that many of us have heard before and I believe these words are true for our first foundation verse. The words of this song say,

Let’s start at the very beginning
A very good place to start
When you read you begin with A-B-C
When you sing you begin with do-re-mi

As we look at this verse, it is imperative that we “start at the beginning” and know Genesis 1:1. It was God that created everything – not man nor was it a “big band” – IT WAS GOD!

Hebrews 11:3 tells us,

By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.

I love that when God speaks – things happen!

Warren Weirsbe say the following about Genesis 1:1,

When you consider the acts of God recorded in Genesis 1:1, you can’t help but bow in reverent worship, for His creative acts reveal a God of power and wisdom whose word carries authority.

In the beginning, GOD!

Follow Up Verses: Psalm 33:9, Romans 4:17

Big Think or Think BIGGER?

I came across a video today on Facebook that one of my friends posted on their timeline that really surprised me. It was Bill Nye, or as some people call him “The Science Guy”, and he was talking about evolution. (Watch Video) Just for the record, my friend was no advocating evolution!

Mr. Nye makes this statement, “Your world just becomes fantastically complicated when you don’t believe in evolution”.

Even after that, this is what caught my eye. He says, “if as parents, you want to deny evolution and live in your world that is completely inconsistent with everything we observe in the universe, go ahead but don’t force your children to believe in it. We need them to be scientifically literate voters and taxpayers for the future.”

After this statement, he finishes the video and then the logo of whoever is producing the video come up on the screen. The logo, or name of the company, was “BIG THINK”.

I am currently reading a book entitled “Worship Matters” written by Bob Kauflin. He is the director of Sovereign Grace Music. He explains that worship is so very important in the life of a christian, but our theology of God is much more important. If we don’t have the right theology of God, then our worship will not be where it needs to be.

So many times, we try to “big think” and what we are trying to do is explain things with our minds and intellect. We try to make sense of things with our finite minds. As crazy as this sounds – we try to explain GOD and who HE is with our minds! King David explains in Psalm 145:3 – “Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable”.

J.I. Packer reminds us:

Today, vast stress is laid on the thought that God is personal, but this truth is so states as to leave the impression that God is a person of the same sort as we are – weak, inadequate, ineffective, a little pathetic. But this is not the God of the Bible! Our personal life is a finite thing; it is limited in every direction, in space, in time, in knowledge, in power. But God is not so limited. He is eternal, infinite, and almighty. He has us in his hands; we never have him in ours. Like us he is personal; but unlike us, HE is great!

Our GodInstead of us trying to “big think” and explain God, I would suggest that we start “THINKING BIGGER”! Instead of us trying to place God in a box and limit him to what our minds can handle and understand, I would suggest that we look into God’s Word and let God be God and see HIM for who He really is – The God that can not be explained!

God:

  • created everything from nothing and spoke the universe into existence with a word (Psalm 148:5 | Hebrews 11:3)
  • sustains all living creatures and non-living matter and HIS power holds all things together and keeps them from exploding or disintegrating (Colossians 1:17)

Our God is greater, our God is stronger, God you are higher than any other.
Our God is Healer, Awesome in Power, Our God! Our God!

Now that’s my GOD!

Are You Being Bold?

Today I came across a great devotional from Eddie Carswell. He is the lead singer for the christian group Newsong. He was talking about the verse in Hebrews 4:16 that says,

Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

He went on to say that because Jesus, as a man, was tempted in every way just as we are – He knows the everyday problems that we go through. Because of this, He understands what we are going through and that is why He is telling us to come to Him  – but come to Him with boldness, asking for mercy and grace to help us when we need it the most.

Eddie went on to tell about Newsong’s road pastor, Bobby Joiner, and how he used this little saying to get this verse across to the guys in the group. His saying was this – “going steady with EDDY”. Here is what he meant:

  • Early – If possible, get up early in the morning before the demands of the day overtake you and give your first minutes or so to God in prayer.
  • Daily – We need daily food from the Father. Have a daily plan to feast on the Word of God. It provides us with nutrition for our spirits.
  • Diligently – You get out of your prayer time with God what you put into it. Put forth maximum effort to diligently focus on God and Him alone.
  • Yielding – Be ready to say YES to God. Don’t let any fine print be in the contract of your obedience to God.

Make God’s Word a priority in your life today! Make God’s Word a priority in your life EVERYDAY! Let’s begin to pray like we have never prayed before and let’s make praying a priority! What an incredible thought it is that God, the creature of the universe, wants to talk to me and has time, mercy and grace just for me!

Are you being BOLD?
